In China a Mamal was found that was traced back to the same time period as the Dinosaurs. This leads scientist to the startling idea that perhaps at some point in history the two co-existed. Here is an article on the finding. I think its going to be really exciting to see the theories of evolution fall appart and make way for intentional design as science advances, and more and more evidence emerges to prove that the Earth began exactly as the Bible said it began.
Notice that evolutionists are not seeking to squash intentional design through scientific evidence and force of reason. They are seeking to squash it by declairing the debate illigitmate. The biggest danger to evolution is that both sides of the debate be presented.
I thought it was really interesting that of the google listing of articles on this current and breakthrough scientific discovery, only a couple of the news sources are from the US, and none of the US news sources are any of the major news publications. Most of the articles are from foreign newspapers. Maybe this is more evidence that the American media reports what it choses, based on how that news will support its ideologies.

This past Saturday Jillian and I got to go skiing/snowboarding yet again (3rd time in 4 weeks!) this time at Beech Mountain as chaperones for the middle schoolers in our church. I got another chance at snowboarding and had a lot of fun. By the end of the day I was doing slopes 3 or 4 times in a row without falling down. Something I didnt even believe was possible at lunch time. I got to ski with some of the kids from our group, and with my wife, and one highlight was a great conversation concerning the five points of calvinism with a nice guy on a ski lift. I am really excited to go again next year (maybe by then my bottom will be healed) and I can’t wait till Jillian and Karissa can join me boarding. It is gonna be a lot of fun!
Ok so every monday I get a column by Dave Barry in my email and most appropriately, here is todays. I enjoyed it very much especially given my most recent experiences. To read it I believe you need an account with the newspaper but its free and the account works with many other big newspapers as well so it is definately worthwhile. Here is an excerp:
For those of you who, for whatever reason, such as a will to live, do not participate in downhill winter sports, I should explain that snowboarding is an activity that is very popular with people who do not feel that regular skiing is lethal enough. These are, of course, young people, fearless people, people with 100 percent synthetic bodies who can hurtle down a mountainside at 50 mph and knock down mature trees with their faces and then spring to their feet and go, ”Cool.”

I was looking around and found a few places with links to outdoor blogs. Since its getting to be that time of year again when we start thinking about getting out and backpacking, hiking, kayaking, snowboarding, etc. then I thought you might be interested in knowing these are out there to help appease the call of the outdoors:
getoutdoors.com:
treknologies
twoheeldrive
simplehiker
yosemiteexplorer
cutter
gadling
ecotrend
utoutdoors
So there you have it. All the outdoor reading you could ask for, updated daily. Now you will never actually have to go outdoors yourself. Just spend your 4 day weekend reading about it. Hmmm. be sure and check out the Shamrock upclimb on the last blog listed. It looks like that would be a lot of fun. Reminds me of Monument National park out there in Utah.

Saturday we are going skiing up at winterplace in west virginia. James surprised us with a two week visit so he is going, and Jenny is comming along too. It’ll be fun because Jenny will be learning to ski while I’ll be learning to snowboard, so I anticipate spending the day learning with her. Weather forecast is for snow the entire day! It’ll also be great to be back on the slopes with James. Some of my best memories are of us skiing. He would also go straight down the mountain and I would be the more cautious one. We would have a lot of fun doing all the blackdiamonds though. Good times, and looking forward to tomorrow!

Man we had a really great time here. It was in the 20s and snowing the whole day, and conditions could not have been better. Since it was Presidents Day weekend and snowing and an olympic year, it was probably as crowded with people as it has been in 4 years, but the singgles lines went fast and its fun to weave in and out of people.
I did snowboarding for the first time and fell down a LOT. My entire body is wracked with pain right now, but it was worth it. By lunch time I felt like I had reasonable control of the board, and by the end of the day I was doing 1080s on the halfpipe and grabbing the board just to show off. Ok maybe not. But I was feeling confident with everything by the end of the day and having a lot of fun with it. I am looking forward to doing some more boarding at Beech Mountain this saturday, and I plan to start the day off with a lesson that might formalize some of the things I have learned so far and help me out for the future. Overall it was a wicked day of snowing and I am totally stoked man! (more snowboarding lingo here)

Jon Papeldon has a lot of promise, as this article underlines. I am very excited for the future of the Red Sox, and especially excited at the pitching/defense approach taken by management. Also they have refused to sacrifice the future of the club for the now, and their farm system is in great shape and will produce stars for Red Sox teams of tomorrow.
Why is this so important? When you have someone come up through your farm system you are guaranteed 4 years of their service without having to sign them to a huge contract. Teams like Atlanta are dominant year after year without having a huge payroll because they don’t often have to sign expensive free agents. Instead they plug holes with players from their farm system who are just comming into the best years of their career. The Red Sox are definately moving in that direction.

Now they are offering a Million Dollar bounty for the lives of the Danish cartoonist(s?). Further confirmation that Islam has no understanding of human rights and personal freedom. Here is a link to an article about it.

Here is to Jillian, my love now and forever. My best friend and companion, through all things and in everything. My beautiful and most precious. She’s so high above me and yet she stoops to take my hand. I who am but dirt, am loved by a flower. Thank you God for your gift of her to me. Jillian I love you dearly, truly and forever! Muuuuaah!
We sat side by side in the morning light
and looked out at the future together.

Of cartons filled with chocolates newly pack’d?
Or dinners of caviar and Cabernet,
And moonlit walks with starlets who attract?
Nay, on love’s day my diamonds will be those
In sunny Southern ballparks; and they’ll shine
With exploits of this season’s Carmine Hose,
From pitching mound to farthest foul-ball line.
You may believe my soul most tempest-tossed
To dwell on sports, and Venus’ child ignore,
And think that in my mind, love’s labour’s lost
When I shun Cupid for a baseball score.
Yet you can keep your flow’r and chocolate-box;

I am a huge fan of backpacking, and had very enjoyable experiences with the activity the past two years. This past fall I had a great time out at Linville Gorge and at Shining Rock Wilderness, and I am very much looking forward to more trips this year. When I say very much looking forward to, what I actually mean is that I am currently obsessed. I have been telling everyone who will listen to me about my two most recent purchases. One is an internal frame pack for Jillian (all I did was show it to her and she said she wanted it!) and the other is a very nifty little two man tent.
Justifications for purchases? The backpack is just right for the type of trip we are planning for the girls. The pack is designed with a large frame pack, and a smaller napsack that rides on the outside of it. This way she can carry lots of stuff in to the base camp, and then the rest of the time she can carry the smaller pack on excersions that end up back at the base camp. The tent is very well proven, both by thousands of happy users and by Kevin Hamilton (must I say more). On our trip out to Shining Rock Wilderness the two of us found it to be big enough to sleep two comfortably. I now feel like I am set for the season so long as I can continue to use my dad’s pack that I have used on past trips.
So what more is there to be excited about in February? Planning trips of course! A few ideas have floated around so far. One is a overnighter out at Linville Gorge that would include some first timers, my wife and sister in law (hence Jillians new backpack). What do we have to look forward to out at Linville? Some beautiful views for one thing, from the top of table rock. There are also swims in the river, rock hopping around it, and thoughtful hours spent relaxing and reading in a nook or cranny by it. Most memorable times at Linville last fall was lunch under the rock ledge during the one rain shower of the weekend, and the full moon reflecting on the river late at night.
Another idea is to try out the Black Mountain Crest trail. We have never been there before but here is trails.com’s review: “An inspiring overnight backpack or shorter day hike across the Black Mountains, with summits all well above 6.000 feet. Views are astounding along this sparsely vegetated ridge, plummeting 4000 feet into adjacent valleys. General location: Mount Mitchell, Burnsville, and the Blue Ridge Parkway…” Other reviews describe the treck as being difficult, but definately worth it due to the amazing views to be had, and trails.com ranks it 22nd in the nation.
Two online backpacking sites to get you excited about the sport: www.backpackgeartest.org is a site with tons of well organized reviews from real users on gear that you might be interested in buying. Also www.getoutdoors.com/goblog/ is an outdoor enthusiasts daily blog that is interesting to follow. Also a great site for anything backpacking is gorp.com. Know any more good sights, or have any ideas for trips this year? I am there!

From the designer of SpaceShipOne comes the Global Flyer. It has already broken the world record for a solo flight around the world and at this very moment it is attempting to break the world record for longest flight without refueling. I absolutely LOVE this stuf! I think Richard Branson has a great vision for aeronautic development via the market rather then the government. Here is an article on what is currently taking place and here is the Global Flyers home page. Next big space development? The space elevator! This is stepping out of the box in such a huge way I am positive it will be the difference between taking a ship accross the atlantic and flying a plane. I want to be an astronaut when I grow up! As a side note, there are some great wallpapers on the Global Flyers site.
